Father of Southport Killer Implies Son Influenced by Migration History

Father of Southport Attacker Reflects on Immigrant Challenges

The father of Axel Rudakvana, who committed a mass stabbing in Southport, suggested that the struggles of assimilation experienced by immigrant families may have impacted his son’s mental health prior to the attack, which left three British girls injured last year.

Initially, traditional media and law enforcement downplayed the significance of his immigrant background, stating merely that Rudakvana was “from Cardiff.” It was later revealed that he is the son of Rwandan immigrants. Alphonse Rudakubana, the attacker’s father, shared during the investigation that being a second-generation immigrant made his son feel disconnected and somewhat isolated from his British peers.

Rudakubana mentioned, “I think what influenced them was that we were a small family with just two friends from Rwanda. They realized they were somewhat alone compared to their classmates. Even though they were born here, they understood they were in a foreign land.”

The challenges faced by children and grandchildren of immigrants as they try to fit into British society have been widely recognized. A study by the University of Birmingham highlighted that these groups often encounter ‘cultural alienation,’ which can leave them vulnerable to radical influences.

The study also pointed out how some segments of the Muslim diaspora may disconnect from their original culture and adopt global Islamic solidarity, which can contribute to radicalization when mixed with anti-imperialist views.

Despite being referred to counterterrorism programs numerous times, Rudakvana was always deemed not a threat by authorities, even after being found with al-Qaeda training materials and a potential biological weapon precursor. He has been linked to a 2024 mass stabbing that resulted in three fatalities and multiple injuries, with officials suggesting there was no clear ideological motive.

However, his brother, Dion Rudakvana, offered a different perspective during this week’s interrogation. He speculated that Axel intentionally targeted children to, as he put it, “inflict particularly severe damage on society,” emphasizing that children represent the future.

Dion expressed worry when he noticed Axel leaving the house the morning of the attack, especially since he hadn’t seen him leave in almost two years following a prior arrest for carrying a knife on a bus in 2022. Asked if he suspected his brother might commit an attack, he hesitated, saying, “At first, potentially, yes,” but felt he didn’t have enough evidence to alert the police.

Alphonse Rudakubana, during questioning, apologized for not confronting his son’s violent behavior, admitting he felt “ashamed” of his son’s actions and acknowledged his failures as a parent contributed to tragic outcomes.

The investigation brought to light that the assailant had previously threatened his father and had been found with a bow and arrow set and chemicals in his room days before the incident. Despite awareness of his son’s history of violence, Alphonse could not bring himself to contact law enforcement.

The investigation remains ongoing…
