Motorcycle Cop Survives Fiery Accident
A motorcycle officer, who endured severe injuries in a tragic accident during a funeral procession, was released from a Long Island hospital on Thursday, greeted by a cheering crowd of 200 fellow officers.
Michael Hyland, age 53, is fortunate to be alive after his Harley-Davidson collided with a Toyota Tundra in Lindenhurst on October 6, as medical professionals explained to the media.
“He had fractures from head to toe; I mean that literally,” stated Dr. James Boswinkel. “Mike’s impact was so intense that his vertebrae separated from his skull, a situation known as internal decapitation, which typically leads to death.”
“It’s astounding that someone could survive such severe injuries at his age,” Boswinkel added.
After the crash, Hyland was quickly transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, where he was placed on a ventilator and life support before being moved to Stony Brook University Hospital.
His injuries were severe—he suffered a traumatic brain injury, a fractured vertebra in his neck, a broken shoulder, multiple rib fractures, and extensive damage to his pelvis, femur, hip, tibia, and kidneys.
The collision’s force caused his vertebrae to disconnect from his skull, triggering a typically fatal condition.
Hyland spent an entire month in the hospital, undergoing more than six surgeries, and ultimately made an impressive recovery, leading to his discharge from Stony Brook amidst a hero’s welcome.
“Today marks the beginning of Officer Michael Hyland’s next recovery phase as he heads to rehab,” remarked Nassau County Police Chief Patrick Ryder.
Ryder stressed the importance of safety, saying, “We have to slow down. You need to consider before using these vehicles. The roads are getting out of hand. Just this morning, two severe accidents occurred in Nassau County, including the tragic death of a 14-year-old child walking to school.”
