House Republicans are looking to introduce a bill that would cut federal funding to New York City while Democratic Socialist Zoran Mamdani is mayor.
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) is leading the charge with the “Redirecting U.S. Funds from Anti-National Interests Act,” also known as the “Mamdani Act,” according to reports.
The proposed bill outlines that, irrespective of any other laws, as long as Zoran Mamdani is serving as Mayor, any unobligated federal funds for the city will be “hereby cancelled” and “no Federal funds shall be obligated to New York, New York, or expended for any purpose.”
It is anticipated that the bill will be introduced on Friday.
Mamdani, 34, recently won the New York mayoral election, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, along with Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Former President Donald Trump signaled he might also consider cutting federal funding to NYC if Mamdani won, saying that it would be “highly unlikely” he would support the city under Mamdani’s leadership.
Carter’s bill may not gain traction in the House but showcases a Republican effort to frame Mamdani as a representation of the broader Democratic Party’s policies. As a political strategy, it seeks to tie Democrats across the country to what they view as radical ideas.
While campaigning for the Georgia Senate, Carter advised taxpayers not to waste funds on programs he believes will lead to financial ruin.
He further commented, “If New Yorkers want communism, we should let them have it and not artificially support them with a successful capitalist system. Any New Yorker of good sense is welcome to move to the great and free state of Georgia.”
