Pelosi Announces Decision to Not Seek Re-Election

Critics of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, expressed their satisfaction on Thursday after she revealed that she wouldn’t be running for re-election at the end of her current term.

Many prominent conservatives on social media welcomed her announcement, although some took the opportunity to poke fun at her family’s trading prowess. Her husband, Paul Pelosi, has faced ongoing scrutiny over his investment successes, but Nancy has consistently denied any allegations of misconduct or insider trading.

Conservative commentator Stephen Miller quipped, “Pelosi isn’t retiring. She’s just making money.”

Pelosi shared her retirement news in a video posted online on Thursday morning. She has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1987.

“For me, there is no greater honor than to stand on the floor of the House of Representatives and say, ‘I speak for the people of San Francisco.’ I truly love representing your voice in Congress, and I’ve always honored the spirit of St. Francis, ‘Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,'” Pelosi said.

“That’s why I want San Franciscans to be the first to know that I am not seeking re-election to Congress.”

Having been a significant influence in American politics for decades, Pelosi served as Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. She remains the only woman in U.S. history to hold that position and played a vital role in advancing major liberal initiatives during the Obama administration, including the Affordable Care Act.

Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, seized upon Pelosi’s announcement to advocate for the PELOSI Act, a bill he reintroduced this year. The proposal aims to ban Congress members and their spouses from trading stocks while in office. “Nancy Pelosi is retiring. Now is the perfect time to pass the PELOSI Act and ban stock trading by members of Congress,” he stated.

Geiger Capital, a financial and political commentary account, made a sarcastic compliment regarding Pelosi’s stock trading skills, saying, “*Nancy Pelosi Announces Retirement from Congress: WAPO. Greatest person ever.”

Eric Daugherty, a Florida journalist, remarked on her retirement, “It’s official. 85-year-old Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi is retiring. We need term limits. She’s leaving next year. Pelosi has done a tremendous amount of damage to the country.”

Independent journalist Glenn Greenwald reacted to a comment from Representative Pete Aguilar about Pelosi being a significant figure in the Democratic Party, stating, “Nancy Pelosi seriously claimed that Joe Biden belongs on Mount Rushmore.”

Conservative writer Ed Morrissey reflected on Pelosi’s legacy and hinted at a rivalry with former President Donald Trump. “Mr. Pelosi thought she had personally kicked Orangeman Bud out of politics in 2020, only to watch Mr. Trump not only win but return to inflict complete humiliation on his chosen nominee,” he noted, referring to Vice President Kamala Harris’s support for the 2024 Democratic nominee.

President Trump commented on Pelosi’s upcoming departure, calling it “a great thing” while labeling her as “evil.” He mockingly referenced her two impeachments. In a recent interview, Pelosi described Trump as a “vile creature” and the “worst thing” on the planet.

As commentators revisited her career on Thursday, many acknowledged her groundbreaking speaking skills and her reputation for getting things done.

Representatives for Pelosi did not immediately respond to requests for comments.
