Airport security delays exceed 2 hours during government shutdown, according to TSA official

As the U.S. government shutdown continues, airlines are now cautioning travelers about possible schedule adjustments. By Thursday afternoon, over 4,100 flights headed in and out of the U.S. faced delays, while around 420 were canceled, as reported by FlightAware.com. In response to the situation, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has created a flight reduction plan that restricts air traffic at 40 airports.

Adam Stahl, the Acting Administrator of TSA, remarked that the extended shutdown is significantly affecting police dispatch wait times. He stated, “While officers remain committed to their mission and the security of the public, we are witnessing longer wait times likely to worsen.” For instance, at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, wait times have exceeded two hours. “If the shutdown persists, we could see similar delays everywhere,” he added.

Usually, the TSA advises passengers to arrive about two hours prior for domestic flights and three hours for international ones. “It’s wise to stick to those guidelines,” Stahl recommended. He noted that peak travel times would likely result in even more extended waits.

“We urge folks to comply with the protocols, particularly in heavily impacted areas like Houston, Los Angeles International Airport, and Orlando. Going early is the best course of action, and remember to be patient with TSA staff; they’re trying their hardest under tough conditions.” Stahl emphasized the importance of being mindful of different operational flows at various airports, as certain times of the day can be busier than others.

Looking ahead, he expressed concern about how the ongoing shutdown could affect travel during the upcoming holiday season, saying, “The situation will get trickier, particularly with increased wait times and inconveniences for travelers.” He reassured the public that safety measures remain a priority despite the challenges. Interestingly, Stahl shared a touching story about a TSA employee facing economic hardships, highlighting the personal impact of the shutdown on workers’ lives.
