Discussion on Bill Cosby by “The Cosby Show” Co-Stars
The co-stars of “The Cosby Show” believe that it’s important to approach conversations about Bill Cosby’s career with nuance.
The beloved sitcom aired from September 1984 to April 1992 and is often recognized among the greatest television shows ever, as noted by TV Guide in a 2002 list of top 50 shows.
Following the numerous sexual abuse allegations against Cosby, the show was removed from broadcasting platforms. Even after his conviction was overturned in 2021, the show remained off the air.
One former cast member has recently suggested that it’s time to distinguish between Cosby’s personal life and his creative work.
“All colors are now available because black people pushed their way through the door,” she remarked.
On the podcast “Hate to Break It to Ya” hosted by Jamie Kennedy, Raven-Symoné, who portrayed Olivia Kendall on the show, defended the 88-year-old Cosby.
“We need to separate the creator from the creation,” she explained, asserting that the show’s impact on American society and television is significant.
Reflections of Raven-Symoné
Raven-Symoné, whose full name is Raven-Symoné Christina Pearman-Maday, has enjoyed a long and fruitful career, including her role in Disney’s “That’s So Raven,” which aired for 100 episodes.
However, she did not exonerate Cosby regarding his alleged actions during the podcast discussion.
When Kennedy pointed out that Cosby had provided job opportunities for many in the black community, she agreed but quickly added, “He has been accused of terrible things. It’s not an excuse, but there’s a personal aspect to it.” She emphasized the need to keep personal actions distinct from professional accomplishments.
The Value of Diversity
In their conversation, Kennedy and Simonet discussed the importance of diversity. Raven-Symoné expressed her appreciation for the growing representation in the entertainment industry.
“It’s a responsibility now that all backgrounds are acknowledged and protected,” she commented.
Kennedy agreed, drawing from his experiences living in diverse neighborhoods.
Open Opinions
The former “View” co-host has been known for sharing her candid views. Back in 2016, she indicated that she might leave the country if Donald Trump was elected, expressing her intention to go to Canada.
More recently, she addressed Florida’s controversial child custody bill, advocating for a different approach to the language used in such legislation.
As a lesbian, she hosts a podcast with her wife and has shared her past discomfort with labels. She once mentioned that she prefers not to be identified strictly as gay, declaring, “I just want to love people.” Furthermore, she highlighted her sense of identity as simply “American.”
She addressed misconceptions regarding her identity, clarifying that when overseas, she is seen as an American, rather than being labeled by her ethnic background.
