Obama: Election results show that the American people are aware and engaged

Obama Commends Democrats on Recent Election Wins

Former President Barack Obama expressed his congratulations to the Democratic Party this week on their election triumphs, while also noting that Americans are closely observing government actions.

“It was encouraging to see progressives rally,” Obama remarked during an unexpected visit to a live recording for the podcast “Pod Save America.” He emphasized that “the American people are paying attention.”

“They’re not in favor of brutality,” he continued. “What people want is not to see those in power simply playing a game for their own benefit. They care about community and believe in treating one another with dignity and respect.”

Democratic candidates had a significant showing in recent elections across New Jersey, Virginia, and New York City, even as the federal government faces an unprecedented shutdown.

In New York, voters selected Democratic mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani to take over for Eric Adams next year. Meanwhile, moderate Democrat Abigail Spanberger from Virginia and Rep. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey both triumphed over their Republican challengers in gubernatorial contests.

Additionally, California passed Proposition 50, which allows the state to redraw district lines aimed at benefiting Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. In contrast, Republican lawmakers in states like Texas and Ohio are implementing measures to increase their representation in the House next year.

Despite these successes, infighting within the party could hinder efforts to strengthen its position following significant Republican victories in previous elections.

Obama, who supported Spanberger and Sherrill during their campaigns, cautioned against the party setting strict guidelines for its candidates in his remarks.

The Democratic Party has faced challenges recently due to differing strategies on how to approach the midterm elections. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer prefers a more moderate candidate, while others advocate for a younger, more progressive figure to lead.

“We saw wins from Abigail Spanberger and Zoran Mamdani,” Obama mentioned, highlighting that both represent a hopeful vision for the future.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that everyone feels welcome to participate, and to discuss how we can ensure dignity and respect for all,” he added.

The former president also highlighted the critical role of engaging young voters.

Obama stated, “When young people are involved, we succeed.” Recent election data indicates that groups that have leaned Republican in recent elections, including Black, Latino, and younger voters, have shifted their support towards Democrats this time around.

“Tuesday was a positive step, but there’s still much work ahead,” Obama concluded.
