Trial Commences for Las Vegas Actress Charged with Murder
A Las Vegas actress has been accused of murdering the father of her children, with prosecutors revealing that she allegedly decapitated him and fled with the severed head. This unsettling case began its trial phase recently.
Devin Michaels, aged 45, faces charges related to the death of Jonathan Willett, 47. His headless body was discovered in his Henderson, Nevada residence in 2023.
The prosecution contends that Michaels aimed to prevent Willett, the father of her two kids, from having a peaceful life with their son, Deviere Willett. The trial commenced on Wednesday, as reported by various outlets.
In a perplexing twist, Michaels had married her son-in-law, which made Willett her former husband and now stepfather to her children. Prosecutors suggested that her desire to create a happy family with her current spouse contributed to her alleged motive for the murder.
“This was the future she envisioned, and the only way to achieve that future was to eliminate John from her life,” stated Deputy District Attorney John Giordani.
The horrific discovery of Willett’s dismembered body was made by his mother, who found him covered in chemicals, according to police documents.
Michaels reportedly told investigators that while she was attempting to engage Willett in a sexual act, she struck him with a wooden stick. Prosecutors claim that following the incident, she transported the head from Henderson to Las Vegas and discarded it in a trash bin.
Although Michaels initially accepted a plea deal, she later attempted to withdraw from it, prompting revelations about the complicated relationships at play in court.
While her defense acknowledged the unusual love triangle, they suggested that it was Deviere Willett who became aggressive and attacked his father after Michaels expressed a desire to reconcile with her ex-husband.
“Deviere was expelled from the home because his father, whom he despised, not only came over, but brought his new wife. He had no intention of mending that relationship,” attorney Robert Draskovich told the jurors.
Prosecutors described Michaels as a cold-hearted individual intent on removing Willett and her husband from their lives. “Buckle up; it’s set to be a tumultuous trial,” Giordani warned the jurors before displaying graphic images of Willett’s remains.
Authorities have yet to recover the head or the weapon used in the alleged murder.
