David Sacks, Trump’s AI Chief: No Federal Support for the AI Sector

Federal Bailouts for AI Companies Dismissed by Trump’s AI Chief

David Sachs, who held the position of AI and cryptocurrency czar during the Trump administration, has stated unequivocally that federal bailouts for AI companies are off the table. This declaration follows a controversial call from OpenAI’s Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, who suggested at a recent conference that a federal “backstop” might be necessary to fund the construction of AI data centers. Although she later walked back her comments, Sachs firmly opposed the idea.

According to Sachs, the government has made its stance clear: no bailouts will be provided to AI firms. He highlighted that the U.S. has several leading AI companies, saying, “If one fails, others will take its place,” emphasizing the robustness of the American AI sector. Later, he noted a desire to simplify permitting processes to enhance infrastructure development without driving up residential electricity costs.

Sachs mentioned that Friar’s comments might have been misunderstood. He wrote, “To give you the benefit of the doubt, I don’t think anyone was actually seeking relief (that would be ridiculous).” His remarks seem to suggest a more nuanced view of the discussion surrounding AI funding.

Interestingly, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman had a tense moment when questioned about the company’s substantial spending. When asked how the firm could rationalize a massive financial commitment against its revenue, Altman, visibly irritated, retorted that if anyone wished to sell their shares, he could easily find a buyer, implying there was significant interest in OpenAI shares.
