DHS Enforces New Mask Ban for Protests at Federal Facilities
The Department of Homeland Security has issued a warning to anti-ICE protesters in Portland about a newly enforced mask ban around federal properties.
Numerous demonstrators have used masks or neckerchiefs to obscure their identities, often engaging in violent acts and causing property damage, particularly during protests against President Trump’s deportation policies. The administration is now taking steps to curb this form of anonymity.
According to the DHS, the rules outlined in “Prohibited Activities” specify that engaging in concealing one’s identity is illegal under certain conditions. “Wearing a mask, hood, disguise, or device that hides the wearer’s identity while violating any laws falls under this regulation.”
The implementation of these new regulations was initially set for January but has since been advanced to this month.
Additionally, the DHS has introduced guidelines for federal agents to arrest and prosecute those involved in rioting.
A message from the DHS Office of Public Affairs noted a push to reinforce rules regarding behavior on federal properties, stating that the changes provide necessary powers to federal agents in light of escalating violence at DHS facilities.
The communication emphasized that the early enforcement aims to address rising public safety threats and suggested an updated fee schedule for fines related to misconduct.
Violating this new regulation can result in a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by up to 30 days in jail or a fine of as much as $5,000, or both.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented on the measures in place to safeguard law enforcement officers facing increased violence and illegal activities at federal sites. “Under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Noem, we are not going to accept continuous violence from Antifa or other extremists targeting our facilities. We prioritize law and order,” she said.
During the announcement, DHS highlighted recent incidents, including a September attack where individuals armed with ammunition marked “ANTI-ICE” opened fire on ICE offices, resulting in the deaths of two detainees.
In another alarming event in July, a left-wing group attempted to ambush the Prairieland Detention Center in Texas. The attackers used fireworks as weapons and shot at law enforcement during the confrontation, injuring an officer.
