Baylor AD Mack Rhoades being examined for reported conflict with player and coach

Baylor’s Athletic Director at the Center of an Investigation

Baylor University’s Athletic Director, Mac Rhoades, is currently under scrutiny due to reports of alleged verbal and physical confrontations involving football players and assistant coaches.

Sources close to the situation have spoken to OutKick, with many requesting anonymity out of concern for potential backlash.

On September 20, prior to a Big 12 matchup against Arizona State, tight end Michael Trigg was set to play. He wore a yellow long-sleeved shirt that managed to conceal a shoulder brace, part of his game day uniform.

As things got underway, Rhoades reportedly approached Trigg, placing a hand on him and questioning why he was wearing the yellow shirt. This brief encounter drew attention, especially since various assistant coaches were also present on the sidelines.

This incident took place just before the game kicked off. Tensions seemed to escalate during the match, as assistant coaches attempted to reassure Trigg following the initial exchange, which coincided with Arizona State’s kickoff. On a brighter note, Trigg managed to score two touchdowns and accumulated 71 yards, even though Baylor ultimately lost to Arizona State due to a last-minute field goal.

It’s worth mentioning that Mason Miller, a former Baylor assistant coach who left the team citing “personal issues,” was not involved in the altercation with Rhoades.

Concerning Developments After the Game

After the game concluded, reports suggest that Rhoades stood behind Trigg and other coaches while players acknowledged the fans. However, the atmosphere shifted dramatically when conflict arose involving an assistant coach.

Eyewitnesses shared that while Trigg mingled with his family, Rhoades allegedly approached an assistant coach, grabbing him by the arm and shoulder. He then proceeded to verbally criticize the coach, an event witnessed by several staff members and family members.

A human resources complaint linked to this incident was later filed anonymously, indicating a serious concern from within the athletic department.

Investigation efforts are underway regarding this incident. Those present during both events have been interviewed, with reports revealing the existence of video evidence capturing the events.

Insight into the Ongoing Investigation

Baylor University has initiated a formal inquiry into Rhoades’ behavior, particularly regarding the second incident. Multiple witnesses observed this altercation, which took place in plain sight, raising questions about its appropriateness.

Initially, there were suggestions that Trigg and the assistant coaches should apologize to Rhoades. However, upon further reflection, athletic department members concluded that it should be Rhoades who offers an apology instead.

At least eight individuals reportedly witnessed the incident involving Rhoades and the assistant coach, and television cameras may have captured the altercation, which occurred shortly after the game commenced.

Baylor’s response indicated that an investigation had confirmed the claims made against Rhoades. A statement from the university specified that actions were taken in line with their policies, emphasizing that this matter had been resolved.

The statement also mentioned Rhoades’ regret over his actions, acknowledging that they did not align with the university’s values.

Baylor has not contested the reports regarding the incidents involving Rhoades. When approached for further comments, the university refrained from discussing any specific disciplinary measures taken.

As OutKick continues to monitor this situation, particularly in regard to Rhoades’ interactions with students and staff, concerns remain about unresolved aspects of the situation. Efforts have been made to engage with the College Football Playoff and NCAA regarding this unfolding matter.
