Kenny Chesney Reflects on Deep Connection with Ethel Kennedy
Kenny Chesney recently shared his thoughts on a profound connection he formed with Ethel Kennedy, revealing the details in his new book, *Heart Life Music*. The 57-year-old country music star discussed how their friendship came about, expressing the unexpected depth of their bond.
He recalled attending a show in Gillette, where he was invited to meet Ethel at her home in Hyannis Port. “When you pull up to the Kennedy mansion and see that garden… you’re struck by its history,” Chesney wrote. He mentioned how Ethel’s vibrant, warm personality was overwhelming, making the historical setting feel almost secondary.
Chesney described his first moments with Ethel, emphasizing the lack of traditional labels. “From the moment I sat on the couch with her, there was no history. I didn’t think of her as an activist or an icon, but as a person full of life,” he noted. He reminisced about observing black-and-white photographs of iconic family moments in the living room where they spent time together.
During a memorable day that included lunch, sailing, and playing volleyball with children, Chesney felt a deep, soulful love for Ethel. “Her spirit was so captivating that I wanted to soak up all of it,” he expressed, indicating the profound joy that defined their time together.
Ethel Kennedy, sister-in-law to former President John F. Kennedy, founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Group after her husband’s assassination. Chesney shared that she was often surprised by the bond they had formed, which he described as something remarkable—“written in the universe.”
He continued reflecting on their relationship, saying it was marked by shared humor and zest for life. Interestingly, tabloids even made light of their connection with a playful headline about their sailing adventures, highlighting Ethel’s vibrant spirit even at the age of 90.
Sadly, Ethel passed away in October 2024, at the age of 96. Her grandson, Joe Kennedy III, made the announcement on social media, sharing warm sentiments about her legacy and their love for her. He added that Ethel was reunited in spirit with loved ones who had passed, which was a comforting thought for the family.
When Chesney was later invited to sing at her funeral, he expressed his surprise but felt it was an honor. He reflected on the significance of the moment, performing “You Are My Sunshine” among prominent figures like former presidents and other luminaries.
“Every time I was around your mother, you made me so happy…,” he shared, encapsulating the essence of his connection to Ethel. The performance and the heartfelt sentiments echoed a beautiful friendship that transcended the ordinary, leaving a lasting impression on him and, undoubtedly, many others.
