Giants Suffer Another Heartbreaking Loss
CHICAGO — The Giants faced a familiar and painful scenario once again.
Just like their previous game against Denver a few weeks back, the Giants’ defense had control in the third quarter, only to squander a double-digit lead in the fourth.
This time, rookie quarterback Jackson Dart was sidelined after failing a concussion test between quarters, leaving the team without its main offensive force. It seemed that head coach Brian Daboll lacked confidence in veteran Russell Wilson and opted to bench him.
The pressing question is whether Daboll and defensive coordinator Shane Bowen can weather yet another downfall, especially after they allowed two touchdowns in the last four minutes of a 24-20 defeat to the Bears at a rainy Soldier Field.
Caleb Williams was effective, making a long run down to the 2-yard line before throwing a go-ahead 17-yard touchdown pass with 1:47 left on the clock. He began the comeback with a 2-yard touchdown to Roman Odunze.
Daboll’s decision to kick a field goal from the 1-yard line with just over ten minutes remaining was particularly frustrating. This may have given the Giants a fleeting two-point lead at 20-10, but today’s NFL often calls for bolder moves, especially for a defense that struggles to close out games.
Despite leading by ten points and achieving a fourth-down stop for the third time in the contest, the defense ultimately fell short.
The Bears managed to march 91 yards down the field, scoring a touchdown in just 2:17. The Giants’ subsequent offensive series ended in a three-and-out, marked by a successful but insufficient 11-yard punt by Wilson, compounded by a 26-yard punt from Jamie Gillan.
It’s only been three weeks since the Giants allowed 33 points in the fourth quarter, blowing a 19-point lead against the Broncos. Both collapses now contribute to the Giants’ franchise-record 10-game road losing streak.
Playing amidst adverse weather conditions and with third-string players, Dart managed to rack up 308 yards from scrimmage and score two touchdowns, appearing nearly flawless through three quarters.
However, Wilson’s performance brought back memories of why he was benched after Week 3; he ended the game with four consecutive incompletions, sealing the Giants’ fate as they fell to a dismal 2-8 record. Though Wilson had only 45 passing yards, a catch-and-run by Devin Singletary for 41 yards paved the way for an 18-yard field goal that had briefly put the Giants ahead, 20-10.
