An admired Long Island veteran lost his life after being struck by a stolen vehicle shortly after attending a memorial event at his granddaughter’s elementary school.
Peter Morris, 80, a veteran of the Vietnam War, was about to enter his car around noon Friday outside Woodward Parkway Elementary in South Farmingdale when a stolen Nissan, operated by 24-year-old Randy Colon, hit him at high speed.
The impact sent Morris’ vehicle onto the school lawn, where it began to smoke, while Colon emerged and attempted to escape on foot.
Morris had just taken photos with his 9-year-old granddaughter moments before the tragic incident. His family described him as a “loud and boisterous” jokester, someone who always had a humorous quip ready.
Colon was later apprehended, but unfortunately, Morris was pronounced dead at the scene.
“I’ve lived here for 50 years and this is the worst accident I’ve ever seen,” witness Tony Ferrara shared.
Morris had been capturing memories at the event, which honored veterans. His daughter, Suzanne Lysanek, noted how engaged he had been, sharing stories with others while beaming with pride about his family.
“All these kids came up and thanked him and gave him hugs,” she reflected. “We took some wonderful photos and videos that we will always cherish.”
Witness Katrina Inamorato expressed her shock, especially given the proximity of the elementary school and the presence of children around.
As reported, Colon has been charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crime. He is currently in jail after being denied bail and has a court date set for November 12.
