Hunter Survives Nearly Three Weeks Lost in Wilderness

Getting lost in the wild can be a terrifying experience. For Ron Daly, that scenario stretched over almost three weeks.

“No one really knew where I was,” the 65-year-old said, recalling his ordeal.

Daly set out on a solo hunting trip in the Sierra National Forest on October 13, with plans for a quick half-day adventure, as reported by local news. The area, dense and complex, is located near Fresno, California.

If you stray off the path—well, things can get complicated. “I went down this hill and thought, ‘Oh no, this is not good,'” he remembered. He turned back but couldn’t find his way out.

That very night, a storm arrived, dumping two feet of snow around his broken-down truck. “Oh, we’re in trouble,” Daly thought as he faced the deepening situation.

After his family realized he hadn’t returned, they reached out to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office. This triggered extensive search efforts involving both air and ground teams, as the search moved across rugged terrains.

Daly’s survival instincts kicked in quickly. He had 14 bottles of water and food amounting to about 900 calories, which he meticulously rationed. Eventually, resources ran low, and he felt immense uncertainty. “Nobody really knew where they were,” he remarked, highlighting the despair of his situation.

However, he did find solace in his spirituality. “Every night, it was me and God,” he said, sharing how his faith provided comfort during those long, dark hours.

Then one morning, he claimed God woke him up at 6:45 AM, urging him, “Ron, put on your boots and let’s go for a walk.” With renewed determination, he left the truck and trekked an estimated 10 to 12 miles through the wilderness. The journey was tough, as he often had to stop to rest, battling the challenges of high altitude. Along the way, he stumbled and lost his cell phone.

Eventually, a trio of rescuers located him. “The Christian community came together and prayed,” Daly expressed, profoundly grateful. “They didn’t let me die. God didn’t let me die either.”
