Marty O’Donnell on Politics and Gaming

Marty O’Donnell, known for composing music for the Halo and Destiny video game franchises, recently addressed the growing tension between politics and gaming. In a blog post, he mentioned his intention to run for Congress again, specifically in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District.

His post, aimed at DEIDetected, a group advocating for gamers against DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) influences in gaming, emphasized how interconnected politics and entertainment have become. The original Halo game, which is set against a backdrop of humanity battling alien invaders, has achieved monumental success since its launch in 2001, selling millions of copies.

“The buzz around re-releasing the original Halo, I think, stems from the so-called Woke-ification of gaming,” he remarked. “Gamers have been pushing back against DEI for years, and it seems, just maybe, we’re starting to see some victories.”

O’Donnell recounted witnessing the rise of DEI initiatives in gaming and the backlash that followed. “I remember when non-gamers started pushing political themes in game development. Gamers weren’t having it—they revolted,” he wrote.

He pointed to titles like Dragon Age, which began as a dark fantasy series but incorporated transgender and non-binary characters in its latest installment, Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Some criticized the game for its heavy-handed political messaging, suggesting it alienated players. A particular scene involving a character’s atonement for misgendering another elicited strong reactions.

Critics, like Eric Kane from Forbes, called the portrayals clumsy and ineffective. O’Donnell also mentioned “Concord,” which faced substantial backlash for its over-the-top character designs viewed as pandering to political trends. Despite heavy investment in its development, the game was offline within weeks, with only a fraction of copies sold.

He expressed concern about how the failure of such games paralleled political shifts, noting, “I can’t help but think the demise of Concord came right before a significant election. Just as gamers were taking a stand against woke influences, voters were also trying to reclaim their country from similar ideologies.” He remained hopeful, however. “The push to make gaming fun again, removing the politics, seems to be gaining ground.” Yet, he cautioned that challenges remain.

With this backdrop, O’Donnell highlighted his resolve to run for Congress, determined not to allow “woke policies” to gain traction again. His previous campaign ended in a fourth-place finish during the 2024 GOP primary.

“I have a deep love for this country. Anything worth loving is worth fighting for,” he stated, encouraging fellow gamers to voice their concerns and advocate for a return to passionate, creative game design.
