Russia Claims Britain Is a Hidden Force Shaping European Geopolitics

Russia’s Allegations Against Britain Over Eastern Europe

The Russian government has recently asserted that former Soviet-occupied nations in northeastern Europe are being manipulated by Britain, which it describes as a “disloyal Albion.” This claim is part of a broader narrative suggesting that the UK is secretly orchestrating global events for its benefit. In a public statement after a week of silence, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Western Europe of using countries like Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia—referred to as “fledgling Europeans”—to provoke conflict with Russia.

These countries were invaded in 1940 and annexed until the Soviet Union’s fall in 1991. Russian state media echoed Lavrov’s remarks, depicting these nations as mere “pawns” in Britain’s geopolitical strategy.

Lavrov noted, “All these small countries… have vastly overestimated their importance to Western Europeans and to the elder states of the EU.” He expressed concern about the diminishing number of sensible voices in Europe, which recognize the provocations associated with the Baltic states, primarily driven by Britain.

Earlier this year, Russia revived 19th-century anti-British sentiments, claiming that Britain was deliberately attempting to instigate global conflict. The assertion was made that Britain sought to undermine peace negotiations between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, fearing that any successful deal would contradict Britain’s aim to “contain” Russia.

This narrative aligns with Russia’s portrayal of NATO as an “Anglo-Saxon” coalition, primarily composed of the U.S. and UK, suggesting that other member countries were misled into joining the fight. Russia accused Britain of avoiding direct conflict while watching from its “own island.”

Britain has frequently challenged Russian security and intelligence claims. In 2023, President Putin attributed blame to British spies for a Ukrainian operation allegedly aimed at Russian nuclear sites, asserting that London was instigating a potential nuclear confrontation. Earlier, Lavrov had claimed he was “100 percent sure” that sabotage of Russian infrastructure could be traced back to Britain.
