Accused in Jogging Student’s Death Has Criminal Record
Authorities have revealed that the man linked to the hit-and-run death of a University of Kansas student has a history of criminal activity. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Elsa McGrane was jogging in Lawrence, Kansas, when a white pickup truck struck her and the driver quickly left the scene.
The suspect was identified as William Ray Klingler, 36 years old. The incident occurred near Lawrence Regional Airport around 6 p.m. on Thursday, but McGrane’s body wasn’t found until a passerby called 911 at around 3:35 a.m. She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Several days later, Klingler was taken into custody after the police appealed to the public for tips regarding the case. McGrane was a pre-med student with plans to graduate in 2026.
Court records indicate that Klingler has faced at least two charges related to driving under the influence, including attempting to disable a car’s ignition interlock system and tampering with an ankle monitor. An ignition interlock is a device that requires drivers to complete a breath test before starting their vehicles.
Back in 2003, when he was a juvenile, Klingler faced multiple charges including robbery, criminal damage, and theft. He ultimately was placed on intensive supervision probation for those offenses.
The sheriff’s office expressed their condolences, stating, “Our hearts go out to Elsa’s family and friends in this incredibly tragic situation.”
McGrane was a member of the Chi Omega sorority at the University of Kansas. In tribute, her sorority shared an emotional post on Instagram, describing her as “the kind of person we all wanted to be: honest, kind, and full of light.” They highlighted her ability to connect with others and her unwavering loyalty as qualities that will be deeply missed.
She also served as the house manager for her sorority’s board, earning praise for her grace and compassion. The sorority concluded by mourning her loss, stating, “Her faith, kindness, and sisterhood will forever remain in our hearts.”
As of now, Klingler has not been formally charged but has been booked on suspicion of manslaughter.
