A candidate with Mamdani's 'socialist' approach might replace Seattle's current Democratic mayor.

Inexperienced Socialist Candidate in Close Race for Seattle Mayor

A far-left mayoral candidate, who identifies as a socialist, attributes his campaign’s financial backing to support from his parents. Interestingly, he is poised to potentially unseat the current Democratic mayor, Bruce Harrell, who has been entrenched in local politics for nearly two decades.

As per the latest election updates from King County, Katie Wilson currently has a narrow lead over Harrell, with less than a hundred votes separating them. This lead has shifted back and forth since last week’s general election.

The election is part of a larger picture, which includes significant races in New Jersey, Virginia, and New York. Many viewed the results as a win for the Democratic Party, particularly its far-left faction, which saw several local socialist candidates succeed, like Mamdani.

If Wilson hangs onto his slender lead, he could join fellow self-proclaimed socialists like Mamdani in elected office. It’s worth noting, however, that unlike most of these candidates who won elections recently, Wilson would step into a role overseeing one of the largest urban areas in the country, with Seattle boasting over four million residents.

New Wave of Socialism in American Cities?

“Yes, I’m a socialist,” Wilson stated earlier this year. “I’m not waving the socialist flag here, primarily because I’m not really an ideological person, and I’m not sure if that label would actually help me in the general election. But I’m okay with being called a socialist.”

Both Wilson and Mamdani have suggested the creation of government-operated grocery stores. Wilson has also been a bit vague on how to address the city’s lingering issue with tent encampments, indicating a case-by-case approach rather than a blanket solution. Additionally, she expressed a commitment to opposing the Trump administration.

This far-left candidate faces Harrell, who brings years of experience to the table as a city council member since 2008 and now mayor. Harrell has pointed out Wilson’s inexperience, arguing that it raises concerns about her qualifications.

“She lacks the qualifications for this job. She simply doesn’t have the experience,” Harrell commented in a pre-election interview.

In response to this criticism, Wilson acknowledged her outsider status, saying she’s never held an elected office before. However, she rejected the notion that she lacks the necessary insights and knowledge.

Wilson’s Background and Financial Support

Wilson has run a small nonprofit called the Transit Riders Union and has championed causes like raising the minimum wage and enhancing public transportation access. Before starting this organization in 2011, her career was varied, spanning roles from barista to legal assistant.

Originally from upstate New York, Wilson moved to Seattle in 2004, just before Harrell’s election to the city council. After high school, she pursued studies in physics and philosophy at Oxford, largely thanks to financial help from her parents. Interestingly, she left before graduation—just six weeks shy.

Currently, her parents continue to financially support her as she navigates the high costs of living in Seattle. Wilson mentioned that they regularly send checks to help with childcare expenses, which total about $2,200 monthly. When asked about specific amounts, she was vague, noting she didn’t maintain records.

“Before launching my campaign, my husband and I struggled to manage childcare,” Wilson reflected. “We avoided daycare centers due to costs. But running for mayor made me realize I needed that option.”

Wilson has recently reported an income between $60,000 and $99,000, along with smaller amounts earned as a columnist for different left-oriented news outlets. However, her campaign has not responded to requests for further comment.
