Social Security is issuing payments today - Wednesday, Nov. 12: here's who will receive a check.

Social Security Payments Update for November

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is issuing new payments this month, benefiting millions of recipients nationwide. These payments follow the agency’s distribution timeline set for November.

Who Will Receive Social Security Payments Today, November 12th?

A specific group will get their checks today, including those on retirement benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or survivor benefits.

Out of around 70 million Americans who receive these benefits, most are paid on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month. The timing, however, is based on the birth dates of the beneficiaries who have earned their benefits through social security taxes.

Today’s payments are for individuals whose birthdays fall between the 1st and 10th of the month.

Summary: Payment Schedule for Wednesdays in November:

  • Born between the 1st and 10th: Wednesday, November 12th
  • Born from the 11th to 20th: Wednesday, November 19th
  • Born between the 21st and 31st: Wednesday, November 26th

Who Won’t Receive Benefits on a Wednesday This Month?

  • Some long-term social security beneficiaries

Individuals who began receiving retirement, SSDI, or survivor benefits before May 1997 typically do not get a check on the scheduled Wednesdays, but rather on the 3rd of each month, regardless of their birth dates.

Thus, these long-term beneficiaries were scheduled to receive their November payments on Monday, November 3rd.

Payments are also provided to recipients of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, which caters to low-income individuals aged 65 and older or those with disabilities. Generally, these payments are distributed on the 1st of each month.

This month, however, since November began on a Saturday, SSI payments were made early on Friday, October 31st, affecting about 7.5 million recipients.

  • Dual Beneficiaries (SSI + Regular Social Security)

About 2.5 million beneficiaries in the U.S. receive both SSI and either SSA retirement benefits, SSDI, or survivor benefits. They were set to receive their SSI on October 31st, followed by Social Security payments on November 3rd.

Summary: Recipients on Non-Wednesdays in November:

  • SSI Recipients: October 31st (Friday)
  • Beneficiaries Receiving Before May 1997: Monday, November 3rd
  • Dual Recipients: SSI on October 31st; Social Security on November 3rd

Are Social Security Payments Delayed Due to the Shutdown?

No, despite the ongoing federal government shutdown, the SSA has confirmed that benefit distributions will continue as scheduled. They stated simply, “There is no change in payment date.”

How Much Is the Monthly Retirement Benefit?

Most U.S. Social Security beneficiaries are retired workers. The average monthly benefit currently stands at $2,008.31, according to the SSA. The maximum monthly retirement benefit is $5,108.

What Can Disabled Persons, Survivors, or SSI Recipients Expect Monthly?

Disabled workers typically receive an average monthly payment of $1,582.95, while survivors get about $1,575.30 monthly. SSI beneficiaries receive an average of $717.84 each month.

Social Security to Increase Benefits

Recently, the SSA announced a 2.8% increase in monthly payments starting January 2026, reflecting the agency’s annual cost of living adjustment (COLA). For retirees, this equates to an average increase of $56.

How Does Social Security Distribute Benefits?

Nearly all benefit checks are now distributed electronically, as the SSA transitions to a paperless system. As of September 30, most beneficiaries no longer have the option to receive checks by mail.

Beneficiaries can receive payments through:

  • Direct Deposit: Providing bank details to the SSA. This can be done via the online “my social security” portal.
  • Direct Express Card: A special debit card issued for federal payments, available to those without bank accounts.
