Dolly Parton Reflects on Her Career and Life as She Approaches 80
Dolly Parton shows no signs of slowing down as she gears up for the release of her upcoming book, Star of the Show: My Life on Stage. The country music legend, who lost her husband Carl Dean earlier this year after nearly sixty years of marriage, recently opened up about her remarkable career that has spanned over seven decades. She also candidly discussed the personal sacrifices she’s made and shared her thoughts on why she feels like she’s “just getting started” at 79.
“I’ve moved on quite quickly in my life,” Parton noted. “Sometimes I wonder, ‘How did I manage to do it all?’ Putting this book together made me realize the sacrifices I’ve made. I didn’t have children, so I guess that kept me from feeling guilty. I’m thankful to have seen my dreams come true.”
“People say, ‘You’re turning 80 soon,'” she continued. “And I think, ‘So what? Look at what I’ve accomplished in these years. I genuinely feel like I’m just beginning!’ It might sound silly, but as long as my health holds up, I’m alright for now. Age can be something else—if you let it take over, it will. I tell myself, ‘I don’t have time to get older!’ That’s just not on my mind right now.”
Postponement of Las Vegas Residency
Recently, Parton has faced some health challenges, leading to the postponement of her Las Vegas residency from December 2025 to September 2026, causing fans to express concern.
In October, she addressed her health on social media, asserting she was “not going anywhere just yet.” In a video, she laughed, saying, “It’s October 8th, and clearly, I’m here doing some promotions for the Grand Ole Opry. Do I look sick? I’m still working hard.”
“I want to reassure everyone that I’m fine. I know you’re worried, and I appreciate it, but I’m okay. I’m a person of faith and I value your prayers. Yes, I’ve had some personal struggles, especially after my husband passed away, and I didn’t take care of myself the way I should have,” she added.
Parton shared that her doctor advised her to be careful, but insisted it’s “no big deal.” She mentioned needing to cancel a few things for treatments close to home, but emphasized, “I’m not going to die.”
“There are a lot of rumors out there, but if you hear it from me, you’ll know I’m okay,” she reassured. “I’m not ready to go just yet. I believe there’s a purpose for me, and I want to keep doing what I love.”
Dolly’s Lifelong Journey
Throughout her public life, Parton has encountered ups and downs, but she has always found ways to navigate those challenges. “You have to grow into things and out of them. That’s been my approach with my career,” she explained. “Some think a woman can’t handle certain things, but I don’t pay attention to what others are doing—I focus on my own path.”
“I’m not here to outshine anyone but myself. I just strive to be the best version of me every day. Achievements aren’t just about wealth; they’re also about doing what you love and making dreams come true,” she shared.
Parton attributed much of her resilience to her faith. “I know who I am. To many, I’m a star, but I’m just a hard worker at heart,” she concluded.
Looking to the future, she is excited about her next project, Dolly: The True Original Musical, which is set to debut on Broadway in 2026. “I want to leave a positive mark on this world and continue contributing, to help others,” she expressed, revealing a more emotional side, saying, “I feel I cry more easily now, having hidden my heart for so long. I hope people can see my true heart.”
