Joy Reid Critiques MSNBC Over Dowd’s Firing

Joy Reid, a former MSNBC host, recently voiced her discontent with her old network in an interview. She criticized the decision to fire analyst Matthew Dowd following his remarks about the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed in a shooting.

In a conversation with the Guardian, Reid defended Dowd, stating that his assertion—that Kirk should have anticipated violence due to his rhetoric—was both accurate and “not offensive.” She remarked, “I hear from friends who still work at MS. Whatever its new name is, it’s the same place that let go of Matt Dowd for stating absolutely true and inoffensive facts.”

Dowd previously created controversy on September 10 by suggesting that Kirk’s promotion of “hate speech” could lead to violent repercussions. He stated, “Kirk is one of the most divisive young figures in this country, constantly pushing this rhetoric against certain groups. Hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which in turn result in hateful actions.” He made these comments before the network confirmed Kirk’s death, and a 22-year-old, Tyler Robinson, has since been charged with murder.

Dowd added that the current environment makes it challenging for people to suppress harmful thoughts and words, inevitably leading to unfortunate outcomes.

Hours after Dowd’s comments, MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler issued an apology, emphasizing that the network found his remarks inappropriate and unacceptable, asserting that there is no place for violence in America. Dowd was subsequently fired that same day.

In her interview, Reid continued to express her belief that Dowd’s termination was influenced by pressures from the Trump administration to stifle negative commentary about the president. She remarked, “These companies are all in business with the government, and the journalism produced reflects the interests of larger entities.” She suggested that her colleagues at MSNBC understand that Dowd was dismissed for speaking the truth about Kirk—and could face similar repercussions.

After his firing, Dowd accused MSNBC of yielding to pressure from the right-wing “mob.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to MSNBC for further comment but has yet to receive a response.
