Documents released by House Republicans on Wednesday indicate that Larry Summers, who served as Treasury Secretary under former President Bill Clinton, maintained regular contact with Jeffrey Epstein even after Epstein’s conviction on prostitution-related charges.
These documents, totaling over 20,000 pages, contain email exchanges between Summers and Epstein from 2016 to 2019. Interestingly, the correspondence reveals discussions that touch on politics, including comments about President Donald Trump, along with more casual banter regarding women.
On March 3, 2019, just months before Epstein’s arrest, Summers and Epstein were in communication about a woman with whom Summers had spoken. In one email, Summers recounted a phone call with her, mentioning her reluctance to continue the conversation, which he found somewhat frustrating. His email reflected a mix of discomfort and a hint of humor, as he remarked about not wanting to participate in any sort of gift-giving competition, despite considering himself a friend.
Shortly after that exchange, Epstein replied with a seemingly flippant remark about previous relationships and people’s emotional responses, suggesting an offhand approach to serious matters.
Earlier, in November 2018, Summers had forwarded an email from another woman, indicating a lack of expected replies. Epstein, in his typical fashion, responded that she was beginning to appear needy, which he seemed to find amusing.
In a July 2018 exchange, Epstein texted Summers inquiring about a trip to New York. Summers responded with uncertainty but was clearly intrigued. Epstein’s subsequent message about “being married to the President” hinted at the complexity of their political discussions.
In one striking exchange from late 2016, Summers cautioned Epstein against getting involved with Trump, citing concerns over conflicts of interest and Trump’s behavior. He expressed a desire to distance himself from any association with Trump’s circle.
Summers has previously been known to have connections to Epstein, and the Wall Street Journal noted another correspondence in 2023 where Summers sought Epstein’s guidance on a financial matter related to his wife, a Harvard professor.
As of now, Summers’ publicist has not provided comments regarding the latest revelations.
