When Will Bryce James Make His Arizona Debut?

Bryce James, the 6-foot-6 freshman guard and youngest son of NBA superstar LeBron James, hasn’t yet taken the court for the No. 5 Arizona Wildcats this season. This includes their recent 84-49 victory over Northern Arizona.

During pregame warmups at Tucson’s McKale Memorial Center, he was seen getting ready to play.

After the win, Arizona’s coach, Tommy Lloyd, mentioned that redshirting the 18-year-old is “under consideration.” He noted, “No final decision has been made.” There’s certainly a challenge here: “If Bryce plays even three minutes, that consumes a year of eligibility.” It does make you wonder—wouldn’t it be easier if there were rules like in soccer, where a certain number of games could allow for some flexibility? I think many would agree it seems reasonable.

He added, “I want Bryce to have the best college experience possible and keep long-term options open. Throwing a developing player into a tough situation for just a few minutes might seem good in the moment, but who knows how it’ll feel down the line?”

Bryce did get some time to showcase his skills during an exhibition game against Embry-Riddle last month.

In a recent appearance on Complex’s “Sneaker Shopping,” he expressed his eagerness to play in front of the fans. “Here in Tucson, the crowd is excited for the game, so we’re definitely looking forward to it,” he said.

Originally from Sierra Canyon, Bryce committed to the Wildcats in January after an unofficial visit. It’s interesting to contrast his journey with that of his older brother, Bronny, who played a season at USC but faced a significant setback due to a cardiac arrest during preseason practice.

Now, Bronny is in his second season with the Lakers alongside LeBron. As for Arizona, they’re gearing up to face Cincinnati this Saturday.
