Russia Advances in Southern Ukraine

Ukrainian Military Update

KYIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian military officials confirmed that Russian forces have taken control of three villages in the Zaporizhzhya region. This announcement, made on Wednesday, highlights Russia’s ongoing attempts to expand its territorial claims in Ukraine.

General Oleksandr Shirschiky mentioned on Telegram that dense fog facilitated the Russian advance into Ukrainian positions in Zaporizhzhia. He emphasized that Ukrainian forces are engaged in “heavy combat” to push back the Russian troops.

However, the most intense fighting is reportedly centered in the besieged city of Pokrovsk within the eastern Donetsk region, where nearly half of the recent front-line clashes have occurred just in the last 24 hours. Escalated combat is also being noted in Kupiansk and Ryman, located in northeastern Ukraine’s Kharkiv Oblast.

Since launching its full-scale invasion around four years ago, Russia has managed to occupy approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory. New sanctions from the U.S., targeting Russia’s oil industry—crucial for its economy—are set to go into effect on November 21st. These sanctions aim to pressure President Vladimir Putin into agreeing to a ceasefire.

At the same time, the Ukrainian government is facing a growing corruption scandal that could divert attention from the war efforts. Justice Minister Herman Khrushchenko has been suspended amid an investigation, according to Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko.

The fresh U.S. sanctions impacting major oil companies like Rosneft and Lukoil increase pressure on Putin. Russian leaders have largely avoided significant peace negotiations, leading to accusations from Ukrainian and Western officials that they are stalling while trying to capture more Ukrainian land. Efforts for international peace have so far proven ineffective.

Russia’s larger and better-equipped military has ramped up its assaults, putting significant stress on Ukraine’s smaller forces. Ukrainian authorities reported that the front line has stretched to nearly 1,250 kilometers (about 800 miles) recently. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy indicated early this month that there are around 170,000 Russian troops in Donetsk.

In the past month, the Russian Ministry of Defense has claimed to capture nine different localities in Donetsk. Specifically, eight of these are located in Zaporizhia, seven in Dnipropetrovsk, and five in Kharkov.

Despite these territorial gains, Russia’s drawn-out conflict is proving costly regarding casualties and military resources. Ukrainian advancements on the battlefield have mostly been incremental.

The Institute for War Studies reported that the siege of Pokrovsk is progressing slowly, as elite drone operators and Spetsnaz forces are being deployed, stretching military resources thin.

A Washington-based think tank noted that Russia is attempting several offensive operations simultaneously but is struggling with its logistics.

In response, Ukraine has continued its long-range drone strikes against high-value military targets in Russia. One recent attack targeted the Stavrolen chemical plant in Budionnovsk, located in Russia’s Stavropol region. This facility is known for producing polymers used by the Russian military.
