Mavericks Part Ways with GM Nico Harrison After Controversial Doncic Trade

The Dallas Mavericks made headlines on Tuesday by announcing the dismissal of General Manager Nico Harrison, recognized for his notable trade involving Luka Doncic.

Harrison’s decision to trade Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last season surprised many. Unfortunately for the Mavericks, the team faced challenges in his absence, contributing to Harrison’s firing. Doncic commented on this development the following day after his team’s defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“Dallas, the fans, the players—they’ll forever hold a special place in my heart. I had hoped that connection would last indefinitely, but things don’t always go as planned,” Doncic shared with the media.

The 26-year-old player was later asked about the possibility of returning to the Mavericks now that Harrison is out.

“At this moment, my focus is entirely on the Lakers. I don’t have anything else to add,” Doncic replied.

After signing a three-year contract extension worth $161 million with the Lakers, Doncic is poised for a significant future. His contract includes a player option for the final year, 2028-2029.

Despite leading the Mavericks to the NBA Finals in the 2023-2024 season, Doncic was unexpectedly traded midseason last year. After his departure, the Mavericks struggled, failing to qualify for the playoffs and barely participating in the play-in tournament, marking a disappointing turn for the team.

This season, Doncic is performing excellently, averaging 34.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 8.9 assists over eight games. However, the Mavericks have faced difficulties, holding a record of 3-9 despite drafting Cooper Flagg as the top pick in the NBA Draft.

Next up for Doncic and the Lakers (currently 8-4) is a match against the New Orleans Pelicans (2-9) in the NBA Cup on Friday evening at 8 p.m. ET.
