49ers Navigate Injuries, Stay in Playoff Hunt
The 49ers have faced a slew of injuries this season but manage to stay competitive in the NFC Wild Card race with a record of 6-4.
A key contributor to their success has been quarterback Mac Jones, who stepped in for Brock Purdy during his absence. It raises an interesting question: is Jones proving he’s capable of being the starting quarterback long-term?
However, San Francisco’s coach, Kyle Shanahan, doesn’t seem to think so.
“It’s not a difficult decision,” Shanahan said when addressing reporters on Wednesday. “It’s really about Brock’s health. Mack has been playing exceptionally well. But we trust Brock to perform at a high level, as long as he’s in good health.”
Purdy, who recently signed a five-year extension worth $265 million, hurt his toe in Week 1 against the Seahawks and missed the subsequent two games. Although he returned for the Week 4 contest against the Jaguars, the injury still affected his performance.
Now, six weeks later, the 25-year-old is focused on recovery and getting back on the field.
“When a backup comes in and does well, it’s all anyone talks about,” Shanahan pointed out, referring to the ongoing debate. “I doubt that anyone, including Brock, is dwelling on what happened before. The media and public will focus on current performance, and I don’t get caught up in that.”
In Jones’ eight starts, the 49ers hold a 5-3 record, with the former Alabama quarterback racking up 2,151 yards and throwing 13 touchdowns against six interceptions. Yet, Shanahan remains committed to Purdy, the quarterback who guided the 49ers to the Super Bowl two seasons ago, although they lost to the Chiefs in overtime.
“Brock has proven himself in the past,” Shanahan noted. “He did well against Seattle, but struggled against Jacksonville. Perhaps he shouldn’t have returned at that time. When he’s back, he’ll play at the high level we expect from him.”
Jones, who is 27, was initially viewed as the next big thing after his rookie season with the Patriots, where he helped lead them to the playoffs. Unfortunately, his career took a downturn in New England, culminating in him being benched and traded to the Jaguars after three seasons.
In the offseason, he signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the 49ers, solidifying his role as a high-level backup in a system designed for quarterbacks to excel.
Purdy’s injury is just one of several challenges the 49ers have faced this season. They’ve also lost key players like star defenders Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, while tight end George Kittle has missed a considerable amount of time, and receiver Brandon Aiyuk has not yet fully found his form.
As they prepare to face the Cardinals in Arizona this Sunday, the 49ers aim to keep their playoff hopes alive, with Jones continuing as the starting quarterback.
