U.S. State Department Designates Four Antifa Groups as Terrorist Organizations

The U.S. State Department has officially classified four European far-left groups linked to Antifa as foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs).

This announcement was made on Thursday, highlighting groups identified as “Antifa Ost, International Revolutionary Front, Armed Proletarian Justice, and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense.” These organizations are accused of employing violence against those they see as adversaries of their Marxist and anarchist goals.

Based in Germany, Italy, and Greece, these Antifa-aligned groups are alleged to have committed numerous terrorist acts, including bombings and mass shootings, to advance their far-left political agendas.

Antifa Ost, in particular, has been connected to various terrorist incidents in Germany from 2018 to 2023, leading to the indictment of seven individuals associated with the group.

The International Revolutionary Front, based in Italy, advocates for armed conflict aimed at state overthrow. It has a history of serious terrorist activities, such as planting bombs and a high-profile murder of a CEO in 2012. There’s also the report of a van filled with explosives targeting Microsoft headquarters.

Armed Proletarian Justice (APJ) and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense (RCSD), which are Greek-based groups, engage in “urban guerrilla” tactics against perceived state oppression and capitalist structures. They are known for utilizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in attacks against governmental and state-affiliated entities.

“Anarchist, Marxist, and Antifa violent extremists have conducted a terrorist campaign in the United States and other Western nations for decades,” noted State Department spokesman Tommy Piggott. He emphasized the commitment to dismantling these networks that aim to undermine the principles of the United States and Western civilization.

The State Department further elaborated that anarchist extremists are actively seeking to weaken the foundations of Western society through heinous acts.

“The Trump Administration will persist in targeting Antifa terrorist networks globally. By classifying these groups, we aim to restrict their access to the U.S. financial system and impose serious repercussions on anyone providing support to them,” Piggott stated.

This designation marks the first time the U.S. government has applied FTO status to organizations linked to Antifa, placing these groups alongside notorious entities like ISIS and al-Qaeda. The implications of this classification include:

  • Freezing assets through U.S. financial institutions.
  • Barring members from entering the United States.
  • Criminalizing the provision of “material support” to these organizations under U.S. jurisdiction.
