Blakeman Critiques GOP Leadership Over Governor’s Race

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman has expressed concerns regarding comments made by the state’s leading Republican regarding a lack of a gubernatorial primary. He warned this could lead to a situation reminiscent of a “coronation” similar to that of Kamala Harris.

Blakeman, eyeing a potential bid for the nomination, didn’t hold back in his criticism of Republican Party Chairman Ed Cox, who publicly endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik, who launched her gubernatorial campaign recently.

“I don’t know who appointed him king of the Republican Party,” Blakeman remarked during a speaking event at the American Legion in Massapequa.

Blakeman asserted that he is opposed to any sort of “coronation” within the Republican Party, distinguishing this approach from what he perceives as the Democrats’ handling of their candidates.

Last year, Harris, a former vice president, was swiftly positioned as the Democratic nominee against Donald Trump after Biden withdrew from the fray under considerable pressure.

Cox, in support of Stefanik, stated that there would be no Republican primary, predicting she would lead the GOP against Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, effectively ending what he termed “Democratic one-party rule.”

In contrast, Blakeman, who recently secured re-election with a strong showing on Long Island, asserted that competition is vital for determining the best candidate for the race.

“I think we have to compete and see who the strongest candidate is. If it’s someone else, that’s totally fine with me,” he mentioned, though he did not specifically reference Stefanik.

He emphasized, “We should not just crown someone. We need to identify who is most capable of defeating Kathy Hochul. Many people believe that candidate is me.”

A spokesperson for the state Republican Party reaffirmed support for Stefanik, acknowledging Blakeman’s respected leadership in Long Island while highlighting Stefanik’s backing from a significant number of county chairs across the state.

The spokesperson elaborated that they anticipate her as the nominee, avoiding a primary, and overcoming Hochul in the forthcoming election.

Additionally, a representative for Stefanik noted her strong initial support, claiming she secured “over 70% of the weighted votes from Republican county chairs and conservative backing” from the get-go.

“It’s disappointing that this candidate has already targeted Republican county chairs and state officials throughout New York, especially when we’re more united than ever in our goal to oust Kathy Hochul,” stated Bernadette Breslin.

She emphasized that Elise is the only candidate with a record of winning primary and general elections, maintaining broad appeal across party lines and suggesting that her support continues to strengthen.

Blakeman’s campaign tour took him to Newburgh, Albany, and later to Plattsburgh. He also engaged with business leaders in New York City recently, emphasizing his appeal to independent and Democratic voters as crucial for defeating Hochul. Blakeman intends to announce his decision regarding a candidacy soon.

Both he and Stefanik have voiced criticism of Hochul’s policies while being staunch supporters of President Trump, who has recognized them during their political careers.

“Can we change the state? Can we make it a better place to live? Yes,” Blakeman stated confidently.
