The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has decided to give bonuses to employees of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) who showed exceptional dedication during a recent government shutdown.
This 43-day shutdown forced many essential government workers to put in hours without receiving their paychecks.
During a press conference at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced a $10,000 bonus for TSA employees who exhibited “exemplary service.” She expressed gratitude for those who continued to work diligently despite the challenges.
Noem explained, “We are not only looking at our employees nationwide but also at those TSA team members who have really stepped up during this tough time.” She emphasized that the bonus is a way to acknowledge their efforts while they continue to await their regular salaries.
At the event, she handed out bonus checks to about twenty TSA employees.
“These individuals took their responsibilities seriously, ensuring safety measures were followed. They truly set an example,” Noem added.
The Secretary also mentioned that the DHS plans to keep recognizing public servants who have gone the extra mile during the shutdown. She remarked on the importance of providing financial support to help them and their families recover from the impacts of the shutdown.
In addition, she announced that TSA would implement new security screening lanes specifically for veterans, active-duty military personnel, and families with young children.
