Mike Kafka's new task with the Giants includes a lesson on defense

Giants’ Defensive Coordinator Shifts Amid Firing

In what has been a notably tough phase for the Giants, head coach Brian Daboll chose to stand by Shane Bowen despite increasing public pressure for a change.

However, Bowen’s time came to an end following a series of games where the team surrendered substantial leads, marking a significant factor in Daboll’s own dismissal earlier this week.

“I have a responsibility as a coach,” Bowen remarked. “Our defense hasn’t been up to par, particularly in that shutout game. We’re analyzing everything—schemes, players, various situations. We need to secure these games and avoid those late-game collapses.”

Now taking the reins as interim head coach, Mike Kafka, who has experience as a quarterback and coach, is not limiting himself to focusing solely on offense during practices.

In fact, Kafka is actively involved with the defense as well. Linebacker Bobby Okereke noted, “He’s very present. He ensures our communication is precise. Just before plays, he makes sure we’re strategizing effectively, and if it’s not right, he has us go again. He’s definitely setting standards for us.”

Kafka’s composed demeanor could be a refreshing change during high-pressure moments for the team. In previous instances where the Giants faltered late, Daboll often seemed on the verge of losing his cool.

Curiously, Dexter Lawrence admitted he’s still getting to know Kafka, humorously noting that he had to check with a coach to understand Kafka’s style, saying, “Does he really have a coaching vibe?” It’s been an adjustment for the team, as Lawrence reflected on how Kafka’s constant communication is different from what they were used to.

While Kafka hasn’t indicated any major overhauls, his approach includes subtle tweaks, staying focused on enhancing efficiency and tackling communication hiccups within the defense. “We’re prioritizing our effectiveness when it counts,” Bowen added.

Kafka, who has a history as Daboll’s assistant, is cautious about sweeping changes, opting instead to maintain continuity, similar to what Jets interim coach Jeff Ulbrich did when changing offensive coordinators last season.

Defensive line coach Andre Patterson and inside linebackers coach John Egolug have been with the staff for a few years now, alongside Kafka. The group aims to keep the defensive plan intact while avoiding the pitfalls of excessive modifications. “Our plan remains essentially the same,” Brian Burns explained.

Bowen was originally brought in by Daboll following the departure of Mike Vrabel from the Titans. Although there was some speculation about Bowen possibly joining Vrabel again in New England, Giants owner John Mara chose to retain him through a challenging season.

Drawing on his previous experiences, Bowen expressed nothing but admiration for Daboll’s leadership. Meanwhile, the upcoming game against the Packers presents a formidable task, especially with five defensive starters on the injury list.

Safety Dane Belton emphasized the need for resilience: “If we maintain our defensive mindset, we can succeed. Whatever Kafka communicates to Bowen, as long as we can assert ourselves and finish strong in the fourth quarter, we stand a good chance.”
