Edwin Diaz Discusses Free Agency Outlook

LAS VEGAS — Edwin Diaz is feeling optimistic about the growing interest he’s receiving as a free agent and confirmed that there have been conversations between his agent and the Mets. However, he hasn’t committed to whether he thinks a return to Queens is likely.

“Honestly, I think it’s a 50-50 situation right now,” Diaz shared while on the red carpet for the MLB Awards, where he was nominated for National League Relief Pitcher of the Year. “We haven’t really delved into contract talks yet. So far, we’ve just met briefly. I’m curious to see how free agency plays out.”

At 30 years old, Diaz opted out of his contract, which had two years left at $37 million. After an impressive season where he pitched in 62 games and secured 28 saves with a 1.63 ERA, he’s in a great position to explore his options.

The Mets have issued Diaz a qualifying offer worth $22 million, which ensures they would receive a draft pick as compensation if he decides to leave.

What exactly is Diaz hoping for as he navigates free agency? “I hope to secure the best deal for me and my family,” he expressed. “I have a deep affection for New York and I’d love to stay here. But, if I must go elsewhere, I want to be in a place where I can still be happy and chase a championship. Winning is everything to me.”

Diaz noted that the interest around him feels promising. “I think it’s going well. I’m just following what my agent says, and he seems pleased with the feedback. We’ll just have to wait a bit to see how things unfold,” he remarked.

Reaching free agency was a significant milestone for Diaz after signing a five-year contract worth $102 million back in 2022, just before he could be signed by other teams. His next deal might well require a commitment of four or five years.

“It’s great to be with the Mets, but ultimately, we can’t predict what they’re thinking,” he commented. “I rely on my agent because I trust they want to do what’s best for me.”

Juan Soto Addresses Team Changes

While attending the same event, Juan Soto expressed disappointment over the team’s inability to finalize a new contract and the loss of first base coach Antoan Richardson to the Braves. Soto, who finished third for National League MVP after a season where he stole a personal-best 38 bases, credited Richardson for his success.

“It’s unfortunate, but I understand—it’s a business, and we have to adapt and move on,” Soto said.

He also emphasized the importance of retaining Starling Marte, a free agent whose leadership he praised. “Marte is the kind of player you want in the clubhouse. He brings everyone together, and we need that, especially during challenging times,” Soto noted.

Additionally, he shared his positive sentiments regarding Pete Alonso’s future after the first baseman opted out of his contract. “I’m excited to see where he lands; he’s among the top power hitters in our league. I genuinely enjoyed sharing a uniform with him and hope we get more chances to do that in the future,” Soto concluded.
