Giffords Critiques Proposed Concealed Carry Law
Gabby Giffords’ gun control organization, Giffords, has labeled a recent concealed carry legislation as a “dangerous bill” pushed by “extremists.” They argue this bill would allow individuals to carry concealed weapons nationwide, bypassing state laws.
In a post on X, they stated, “Extremists in Congress are advocating for concealed carry mandates that would enable individuals to carry concealed firearms across the country, regardless of state regulations. With Congress back in session, they could vote on this harmful bill at any moment. It’s imperative they vote against it.”
The organization is focused on the implications of state reciprocity for concealed carry, which is part of Rep. Richard Hudson’s HR 38, known as the “Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act.”
HR 38 aims to remove state borders as obstacles to self-defense, effectively making a concealed carry permit from one state valid in 49 others. This legislation would equate concealed carry permits with drivers’ licenses, allowing validity across all 50 states.
However, concealed carriers must still adhere to each state’s regulations for self-defense. Some states permit carrying in almost all public places, while others have restrictions, such as on carry in bars or places of worship.
Crucially, HR 38 affirms that self-defense shouldn’t be confined by state lines, enabling individuals from any state to carry concealed in every state. Giffords labels this initiative as a measure pushed by “extremists.”
