"Momentary handouts": Disconnect Democrat delivers surprising criticism of Trump's 'No Tax on Tips' policy

Democrats Critique Trump’s “No Tax on Tips” Policy

Democrats are once again targeting President Donald Trump’s policies, particularly a notable campaign promise that has gone live. The “no tax on tips” initiative was introduced during Trump’s 2024 campaign and quickly implemented, gaining support from many Americans across the political spectrum. This tax exemption for tips was included in Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which Congress passed in July, primarily along party lines.

While some Democrats see the tip exemption as a positive aspect of Trump’s legislation, many have been critical of the bill as a whole. For instance, a Democratic Party operative dismissed the policy as “rubbish.” Meanwhile, spokesperson Lindsey Riley from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee expressed that Republicans are just offering “temporary breadcrumbs” to working families. There’s a concern that vital resources are being diverted, putting millions at risk of losing healthcare and jobs to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.

However, not all Democrats share this critical outlook. Some, like Representative Stephen Horsford of Nevada—a state where tipping is a significant income source for many—advocate for lower or even eliminated taxes on tips. Horsford has gone as far as drafting his own bill to address this issue, indicating a divide within the party.

Notably, the National Republican Congressional Committee suggested that the pushback from some Democrats reveals the popularity of the policy. They argue that it’s clear who truly supports working families, suggesting that inconsistent Democrat stances undermine their credibility on the issue.
