Rubiales Egg Incident at Book Launch
Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, faced an unexpected incident during a book promotion event. This occurred after his controversial resignation, which came about following an unsolicited kiss he planted on a player during the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. While he was discussing his autobiography, a man hurled eggs at him from the audience.
Interestingly, the assailant turned out to be Rubiales’ uncle, who was subsequently arrested by police. It’s a rather bizarre twist, isn’t it?
The scene unfolded as recorded video shows Rubiales on stage with his 500-page memoir. Suddenly, the uncle launched multiple eggs, with one actually hitting Rubiales. In the chaotic moment, Rubiales reacted by lunging towards the thrower, but other attendees swiftly intervened to stop him.
Spanish authorities confirmed that the man apprehended was identified as Luis Rubén Rubiales. The reasons behind his actions remain unclear. Rubiales later expressed shock, commenting that he hadn’t realized it was his uncle at first and thought he might be in danger. “I saw him, and I thought he had a weapon,” he stated.
Previous Controversies
Earlier this year, Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault for that controversial kiss he gave to Spanish player Jenni Hermoso after the World Cup final. This incident not only overshadowed Spain’s historic win but also led to Rubiales’ resignation shortly after. Prosecutors sought a prison sentence for him, but instead, he was fined and given a one-year contact ban with Hermoso.
Rubiales maintained that the kiss was consensual, and his legal team criticized claims that he had behaved inappropriately, suggesting he had been a target of various political and social powers in Spain. It’s kind of unsettling how these events are still unfolding, with so many layers to them.
