FBI Clarifies Investigation into Thomas Crooks

On Friday, FBI Director Kash Patel provided insights into the bureau’s investigation of Thomas Crooks after Tucker Carlson alleged he left digital traces that could indicate an impending attack on President Trump.

The former FOX News host claimed the FBI misrepresented Crooks’ “online footprint.” According to a report from Friday, it appears that the 20-year-old discharged firearms at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, suggesting he might not have acted alone.

Patel stated, “The investigation, involving over 480 FBI agents, showed that Mr. Crooks had minimal online and in-person interactions, executed the attack independently, and didn’t reveal his plans to anyone.” He shared an overview of the investigation through a post.

The FBI’s efforts included conducting over 1,000 interviews, processing more than 2,000 public disclosures, analyzing data from 13 seized devices, reviewing nearly half a million digital files, and examining financial records from 10 accounts. They also synchronized hundreds of hours of video footage and investigated data from 25 social media accounts.

Patel emphasized that the agency has never claimed Crooks left no online trace. In a previous post, the FBI clarified its position on Carlson’s assertions.

Carlson, who hosts “The Tucker Carlson Show,” mentioned accessing Crooks’ Google Drive, revealing violent comments made on YouTube between 2019 and 2020.

Some conservative commentators claimed Crooks had left behind a “detailed digital trail of threats” including calls for political violence.

“Thomas Crooks came alarmingly close to causing major upheaval, yet we still lack information about his motives or background. It’s baffling why the FBI seems reluctant to reveal more,” Carlson contended.

The comments exchanged by Crooks and another YouTube user added to Carlson’s belief that Crooks was not merely a “secretive lone wolf” but had shown signs of planning the violence.

Interestingly, Carlson pointed out that Crooks had initially supported Trump. His aggressive remarks were directed at well-known Democrats until he shifted his stance entirely against the president during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was quite a transformation,” he noted.

As for the FBI’s investigation, they have not yet disclosed Crooks’ motive for his attack at the Butler Farm Show and Fairgrounds last year.

The shooting resulted in injuries to President Trump and two others, alongside the tragic death of Fire Chief Corey Comperatore. Crooks targeted the president from an unsecured rooftop less than 200 yards from the stage but was subsequently killed by a Secret Service counter sniper shortly after firing.
