Deli Worker Charged with Murder After Stabbing Ex-Girlfriend

A deli worker has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death in Harlem, reportedly due to jealousy, early Monday morning. Just hours before the horrific incident, Luis Marquez, 41, was seen acting normally at his Bronx job.

Marquez is accused of ambushing Carmen Lopez, who had been waiting for two hours outside an apartment building on West 129th Street around 4 a.m., and stabbing her multiple times—up to 50, according to reports.

Footage obtained earlier showed Marquez at the RC Meat Market, moving about his duties in a seemingly ordinary manner. He punched in around 7 p.m. on Sunday, and the video depicted him in a black apron and cap, cleaning and working alongside another employee.

Before heading home, he even told his boss, Ramon Sedano, that he would see him the next day. “We closed the store, so I said, ‘Bye.’ He said, ‘I’m going over here.’ I told him to be careful, and he said he would see me on Monday,” Sedano recounted.

Upon learning of Marquez’s involvement in the murder, Sedano was shocked. He checked the store’s surveillance footage, hoping to spot anything unusual, but reported that he couldn’t see anything different about Marquez’s behavior.

“He came to work like any other day. Calm, quiet, just himself,” Sedano noted, describing Marquez’s demeanor.

Following the attack, it is alleged that Marquez confessed to family members that he had killed Lopez, who was 47 and a mother of four. He was subsequently placed under psychiatric observation after being taken into police custody at a local hospital.

Marquez and Lopez had an on-and-off relationship over the years, with friends stating that Marquez often exhibited extreme jealousy and anger when he felt she wasn’t giving him enough attention. At the time of the murder, they were not in a relationship.

Lopez was discovered injured by the building’s porter and was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
