Fathers in Maine Advocate for Women’s Sports
A group of fathers in Maine is actively working to safeguard women’s sports from transgender athletes. Recently, members of Maine Girl Dad organized a drive-through event in Brunswick, allowing individuals to quickly sign a petition aimed at prohibiting transgender participation in women’s sports, as reported by WMTW.
The presence of transgender athletes has sparked national debates, with many female athletes facing the dilemma of competing against biological males. The article from WMTW also highlighted that the Protect Girls Sports organization in Maine joined in the petitioning efforts.
To move forward, the initiative—known as the Gender-Based School Sports Participation and Facilities Designation Act—needs to collect 68,000 signatures by February. If successful, it will be presented to voters in November 2026.
In a video shared recently, members of Maine Girl Dads expressed optimism, noting they had already gathered over 60,000 signatures, which they deemed as significant progress.
The referendum aims to require schools to categorize sports teams, restrooms, and locker rooms based on gender—specifically male, female, or co-ed.
In a related incident, back in February, the topic heated up when former President Donald Trump clashed with Governor Janet Mills (D-Maine) regarding her stance on women’s sports protection policies. During a work session at the White House, he warned her about potential federal funding consequences should she not comply.
Following this, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly initiated a lawsuit against Maine concerning transgender sports regulations, claiming that the state’s policies prioritizing gender identity over biological sex undermined female athletes by limiting their competitive fairness and heightening the risk of injury.
Moreover, in an expression of dissent against the local school district’s decision to permit transgender athletes in women’s sports, three activists notably stripped down to their underwear during a Maine school board meeting, according to Breitbart News.
Maine Girl Dads describes itself as a coalition of nearly 8,000 fathers dedicated to advocating for the dignity, opportunities, and privacy of their daughters. Their mission focuses on urging school districts in Maine to reinstate gender-specific policies in educational and athletic settings, promoting a clear stance against allowing men in women’s sports and private spaces.
