Ray Huang Launches Campaign for Los Angeles Mayor

Ray Huang, a candidate from the Democratic Socialist Party, has officially announced her run for mayor of Los Angeles, positioning herself against the current Democratic mayor, Karen Bass.

“I’m truly excited and humbled to share my campaign for mayor of our great city, Los Angeles,” Huang stated on her Instagram account. “After two decades of dedicating myself to social justice activism and organizing, I’ve decided to pursue this mission further as we face uncertain times. My aim is to advance the social justice movement in LA, building on the change I’ve fostered over the years.”

The 43-year-old community organizer, affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), indicated that her campaign would mirror aspects of New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani’s platform. Key areas of focus include universal housing, free public transportation, climate resiliency, and affordability.

Huang also expressed her desire to take on what she views as the “establishment” in the city. “For the last ten years, I’ve collaborated with local organizers and residents to create solutions for our city. Now is the time to act. I will challenge the establishment and the billionaire class, refusing any corporate donations,” she wrote.

In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Huang didn’t directly compare her campaign to Mamdani’s but mentioned her hope to gain support from local DSA chapters that celebrated the New York victory.

She conveyed disappointment regarding Bass’ handling of issues like homelessness and recent political violence, labeling her campaign as a “moment for change.” Huang remarked, “People are feeling trapped and anxious. There’s a sense that while things are changing, the changes aren’t for the better.”

Recently, a trend has emerged where progressive candidates challenge incumbent Democrats across the nation.

For example, Katie Wilson, a progressive activist, recently unseated Seattle’s Democratic Mayor, Bruce Harrell. Like Mamdani, she championed government-supported grocery stores, increased taxes on wealthier individuals, and more affordable housing options.
