Gunmen Kill Teacher Before Mass Kidnapping of Nigerian Schoolgirls

Attack on Nigerian Boarding School

Gunmen with “sophisticated weapons” launched an attack on a boarding school in Nigeria on Monday, resulting in the death of at least one staff member and the abduction of 25 female students during a confrontation with security personnel.

Police reported that the assailants targeted Maga Boarding School around 4 a.m. and engaged in a shootout with security guards before fleeing with the students. A police spokesperson indicated that authorities have initiated a coordinated operation to rescue the girls and track down the attackers, including searches in the surrounding forests and possible escape routes.

Family members of one of the girls expressed their concerns, fearing that two individuals may have been killed in the incident. They recounted hearing that the attackers arrived on motorcycles, initially targeting a teacher’s residence before killing the teacher and then a security guard.

Information Minister Mohammed Idris stated the government is “resolutely committed to bringing the girls home safely.” It was also mentioned that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasizes the protection of Nigerians, especially children attending schools, as a fundamental duty of the state. He condemned the attacks and instructed security forces to find and recover the abducted girls while holding the perpetrators accountable.

Reports indicate that similar kidnappings for ransom have occurred in the region; however, the motives of these militants remain unclear, with no group claiming responsibility. Notably, the bandits involved in previous abductions are not associated with Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa Province. Boko Haram’s assaults on Christian communities led to the designation of Nigeria as a “country of special concern” by the Trump administration.

This designation enables the United States to address severe violations of religious freedom and consider targeted responses, which may include sanctions and increased pressure on Nigeria’s authorities to tackle extremist violence, including attacks from Boko Haram.

Ambassador Mike Walz mentioned that rapper Nicki Minaj will meet with the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to discuss efforts by the administration to end the persecution of Christian communities in Nigeria.
