Miss Israel Faces Harassment After Pageant Incident

Melanie Shiraz, who represents Israel in the Miss Universe pageant, has reported receiving numerous death and rape threats following her participation in an event in Bangkok. This backlash reportedly stemmed from a video that shows her looking at Miss Palestine, a moment that some viewers interpreted negatively.

The 27-year-old noted that the abuse began almost immediately after the video began circulating online. “I’m not certain if that footage was altered, but it seems it was cropped to highlight me,” she shared. Social media reactions quickly turned hostile, featuring hateful comments and clips that seemingly depicted her in a dubious light.

Shiraz explained her initial reaction to the online vitriol. “At first, I thought it might be AI distortion, but realized it was merely a different camera angle.” She had anticipated some backlash for representing Israel but felt the extent of the vitriol was unwarranted. “It shouldn’t lead to such graphic comments or threats on one’s life,” she added, emphasizing how disgusting the harassment had become.

She recounted some alarming messages she received, conveying sentiments like wishing harm upon her based on her identity. “I was told, ‘Go die, you dirty Jew,'” she recounted, adding that she preferred not to delve into the more graphic details.

Shiraz had hoped to foster dialogue with Miss Palestine, maybe even take a picture together to illustrate a message of peace. Sharing her background, she noted her studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and her contributions to Israel’s technology sector prior to entering the pageant scene. “I feel deeply connected to advocacy,” she stated, aiming to give Israel a compassionate face within the broader narrative often dominated by politics.

The incident escalated when photos shared by Miss Palestine after the performance drew attention. “Some weren’t flattering, making it seem like I was looking in a certain direction,” Shiraz mentioned, expressing disappointment that many of the images were not removed despite her request.

While the situation is challenging, she expressed her determination to continue her advocacy work. “It’s tough being perceived as Israeli and Jewish in today’s world; you’re bound to encounter hate,” she said. Regardless of the hostility, she remains committed to her mission. “What I’m doing is significant, and I need to stay focused,” she affirmed.

The 74th Miss Universe pageant is set to continue in Thailand, featuring 121 contestants, with the final event scheduled for November 21st. Shiraz has stressed her passion for representing Israel, indicating that she hopes to shift her career towards advocacy for its causes following the competition.
