Possible Change in Direction for Catsimatidis

John Catsimatidis, a prominent billionaire Republican donor known for his criticism of Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, has expressed a desire for New York conservatives to collaborate with the new administration for the city’s betterment.

On Monday, the grocery store founder organized a panel discussion in his WABC radio studio featuring notable figures from the right, including former NYPD Commissioner John Chell and ex-Republican mayoral hopeful Fernando Mateo.

“What unites us is our love for New York… we want it to prosper as it always has,” stated Catsimatidis during an unusual press conference.

This gathering was initially framed as a launch of a new “watchdog group” aimed at monitoring Mamdani. However, Catsimatidis later downplayed that description during the broadcast.

The assembled political and business influencers indicated their intention to coordinate responses to the new left-leaning leader instead of merely bunching together to keep tabs on City Hall.

“We must keep pushing forward, raise funds, and safeguard this city. Without public safety, everything else falls apart,” warned Chell.

Kathryn Wilde, head of the Partnership for New York City, the nonprofit group advocating for business interests, struck a more optimistic tone.

“We’re enthusiastic about the affordability agenda, particularly regarding housing and child care,” she noted.

While Wilde has shown a bit more openness to Mamdani compared to others, she remains cautious about his proposals to increase taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

“It’s clear that additional government spending and tax hikes could worsen New York’s financial issues,” she remarked, pointing out that the business sector is open to finding alternative funding methods for social policies championed by democratic socialists.

Mamdani revealed plans to meet with President Trump and addressed reporters’ inquiries about the panel during a separate news event.

“I’ve spoken with John in the past, and I’m looking forward to his role in Marty Supreme,” he mentioned, referring to Catsimatidis’ cameo in an upcoming film.

“I aim to establish an administration that responds to the needs of everyone living in this city.”
