Media Insights from FOX News CEO Suzanne Scott
Suzanne Scott, the CEO of FOX News Media, engaged with students at the University of South Carolina on Thursday during a fireside chat that touched on various aspects of media operations and journalism. The discussion emphasized culture, teamwork, creativity, and adapting to change.
Co-hosting the event was Lawrence Jones from “FOX & Friends,” who led the conversation as part of the Baldwin Lecture Series aimed at students in the College of Information and Communications. A video presentation showcased the evolution of Fox News Channel, highlighting its journey from its launch in 1996 to its current status as a leading multi-platform media outlet.
Scott reminisced about the early days when Rupert Murdoch, the network’s chairman emeritus, announced its launch date just five months after his taking office. While many would find that daunting, Scott viewed it as a golden opportunity.
“I started my journey at entry-level as a programming assistant,” Scott shared. “I had a great boss and mentor who guided me. The initial months were filled with challenges, yet I welcomed all the chances to contribute.” She recalled long days working tirelessly, yet those efforts led to significant career growth.
Jones asked Scott about vital lessons learned throughout her ascent from entry-level employee to CEO. “I’ve always operated as if we’re still a startup, never taking my position for granted,” she explained. “My focus is on culture, creativity, change, and collaboration. These principles are essential for FOX News Media’s success.”
She believes that a positive culture in the workplace is paramount. “We’ve created an environment where people enjoy working. It’s truly the best place to be,” Scott mentioned, noting that she prioritizes a family-like atmosphere within the organization.
Scott went on to stress the importance of having the right talent in every role. “Surrounding yourself with the best is vital,” she asserted. Her admiration for the late television pioneer, Chet Collier, was evident as she credited him with imparting valuable lessons on working with talent and producing engaging content.
She recalled, “Working with Collier early in my career felt like attending a master class.” His wisdom on observing and connecting with people left a lasting impression on her. “One of my strengths is identifying individuals who can contribute meaningfully to our projects,” she said.
Scott emphasized that while FOX News has ambitious goals, the team must support each other, acknowledging the human factors at play. “I genuinely care about the lives of our people and understand how personal issues can affect work,” she added, revealing the spirit of collaboration that defines the organization.
Innovation is crucial to stay ahead, she believes. With the rise of podcasts and social media, Scott views these changes as avenues for potential career development. “Be prepared to learn and adapt to new technologies,” she advised students, encouraging them to embrace artificial intelligence as a tool for growth rather than a threat to their jobs.
Asking the audience to remain open-minded about opportunities, she said, “A competitive spirit is essential at Fox News.” Scott encouraged students to engage with AI technology and suggested that its growth will create rather than eliminate jobs.
Reflecting on her own experiences, she shared how technology changes have shaped her career, recalling the moment she realized the potential of mobile work nearly two decades ago. “Things are evolving, and embracing change is key,” Scott concluded, mentioning innovations like the drone program launched in 2012, which has significantly expanded under her direction.
