Nicki Minaj Highlights Persecution of Christians in Nigeria

Rap artist Nicki Minaj is getting recognition for using her fame to highlight the challenges faced by Christians in Nigeria.

As she prepares for an event at the United Nations alongside U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz, human rights lawyer Knox Thames expressed gratitude for her efforts and those of other celebrities like Bill Maher. He noted that the difficulties in Nigeria have persisted for years, often without much attention, so support from unexpected allies is immensely valuable.

Thames stated, “Nigeria’s issues have been overlooked for far too long,” and stressed the importance of bringing these matters to light.

Trump Designates Nigeria a ‘Country of Special Concern’

Thames, who has previously advised on religious minority issues under three U.S. presidents, commented that the loss of life in Nigeria is too significant to ignore. He acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, saying, “There is a pressing need to confront what’s happening. The reality is that thousands of Christians have been killed in the last two decades, and it’s undeniable.” He added, “Discussions about whether this constitutes genocide are complex and require legal scrutiny, but the body count is high enough that it can’t simply be dismissed.”

In late October, President Trump declared Nigeria a “country of particular concern” due to the high prevalence of violence against Christians there. He pointed out that “Christianity is in jeopardy in Nigeria,” attributing many of the violent acts to Islamic extremists.

Trump’s message highlighted a moral obligation for the U.S. to respond: “We cannot idly witness such atrocities. We stand ready to support our fellow Christians worldwide!”

Minaj Responds to the President’s Remarks

Minaj expressed her deep appreciation for Trump’s words, stating, “Reading this filled me with gratitude. Everyone deserves the freedom to worship. No group should be oppressed for their beliefs.” She is set to discuss the subject further at the U.N. meeting.

In a show of mutual respect, Waltz praised Minaj for leveraging her considerable influence to spotlight human rights violations in Nigeria, expressing eagerness to collaborate on initiatives aimed at stopping the persecution.

Minaj reciprocated, emphasizing the significance of the opportunity she has been given, articulating that it feels like a higher calling: “The Barbs and I will always stand against injustice. We’ve been blessed with influence for a reason.”
