Increased Pressure on Hamas After UN Security Council Approval
Following the United Nations Security Council’s endorsement of President Donald Trump’s peace initiative, calls for the removal of Hamas have intensified. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged local governments to collaborate with Israel in expelling Hamas from Gaza.
In a statement made Tuesday, Netanyahu indicated that it was time to “end Hamas’ rule” in Gaza and expressed full support for the UN resolution. Although Hamas has shown some willingness to disarm, mounting pressure from both Western nations and neighboring Arab states might influence their stance.
The prime minister’s office mentioned plans to coordinate with the United States and other countries supporting Trump’s proposal to facilitate the swift return of deceased hostages. Additionally, they highlighted the intention to begin the process of disarmament and demilitarization in Gaza.
Netanyahu’s office added, “Israel extends an invitation for peace and prosperity, urging neighboring nations to normalize relations with Israel and to assist in expelling Hamas and its supporters from the region.”
In July, a resolution was jointly passed by the Arab League, which includes 22 member nations, calling for Hamas to disarm. This was supported by key intermediaries in the region such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains fragile, with minor clashes occurring. However, the ongoing agreement has so far managed to prevent major confrontations between the two sides.
Trump’s peace proposal also suggests the establishment of an “International Stability Force” (ISF) to replace Hamas, comprised mainly of Palestinian technocrats and troops from various Arab nations. This force would operate under the leadership of a “peace committee,” headed by President Trump and former Prime Minister Tony Blair.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly emphasized the U.S. commitment, stating that the United Nations resolutions reflect an effort towards demilitarization, deradicalization, and fostering prosperity and autonomy for Gaza through extensive regional engagement.
