Democrats Urge Military and CIA Personnel to Oppose Trump Administration

Senators Urge Military and Intelligence to Uphold Constitution

This Tuesday morning, Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan shared a video on social media featuring five other senators. Together, they called on the military and intelligence agencies to “stand up” against the current Trump administration.

The six senators, all veterans or intelligence professionals, expressed their concerns in a video titled “Don’t Give Up the Ship.” In her message, Slotkin emphasized the necessity for military and intelligence personnel to know that the public expects them to uphold the law and the Constitution.

“I know the pressure you’re under,” Slotkin, who previously worked with the CIA, stated in the video, which included Arizona’s Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania’s Chris Deluzio and Chrissy Hoolahan, New Hampshire’s Maggie Goodlander, and Colorado’s Jason Crow.

“Americans trust our military,” remarked Hoolahan, a former Air Force officer.

“But that trust is at risk,” added Deluzio, also a former naval officer.

Kelly pointed out that this administration is creating a divide between military and intelligence personnel and the American public, as he spoke alongside Slotkin and Crow.

They urged the troops, saying, “Our law is clear: You can refuse a legal order. You can refuse an illegal order. You must refuse a legal order.” They reminded the military and intelligence members of their oath to protect the Constitution.

Deluzio and Crow noted that threats to the Constitution aren’t just external, but also emerge from within the country.

The senators acknowledged the difficulty of their request, stating, “these are tough times for public servants.” They continued, “Whether you’re in the CIA, the Army, the Navy, or the Air Force, your vigilance is essential. We’ve got your back.” They emphasized the current need for officials to support the laws and the Constitution.

“Don’t give up on the ship,” they repeatedly urged in a rallying cry.

The Constitution’s Article 2, Section 2 declares the president as the supreme commander of the armed forces and oversees intelligence agencies like the CIA and FBI, as detailed in Article 2, Section 1.

The phrase “never let go of the ship” dates back to Navy Captain James Lawrence, who uttered it before his death during the War of 1812.
