Florida lawmaker focuses on sanctuary states regarding illegal CDL problem

Florida Congressman Byron Donald is advocating for a federal effort to address sanctuary state policies that enable undocumented immigrants to acquire commercial driver’s licenses. This comes after a joint operation by ICE and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol led to the arrest of 70 illegal immigrants, with 34 of them suspected of driving large trucks unlawfully.

Donald criticized certain blue states for prioritizing sanctuary policies, stating that it ultimately harms citizens in red states who oppose such measures. He voiced concerns about the national security implications, suggesting that some foreigners are exploiting loopholes to get commercial permits in states like California and New York, even if they lack the ability to read road signs.

“American citizens are following the rules, yet they face dangers from drivers who can’t comprehend basic traffic laws,” Donald expressed, pointing out the absurdity of unqualified individuals operating heavy vehicles.

In response to this issue, Donald has introduced the WEIGH Act, aimed at preventing states from issuing CDLs to undocumented immigrants. He explained that this legislation would not only hold states accountable but also empower the federal government to impose penalties, such as withholding funding from non-compliant states.

The proposed bill includes provisions for the Department of Transportation to conduct English proficiency tests at weigh stations, which Donald believes could mitigate many sanctuary policies in states that do not enforce immigration laws.

Donald’s remarks followed the arrests made under Operation Guardian, which highlighted significant safety risks posed by illegal drivers. Many of those apprehended, ICE officials noted, are behind the wheel of heavy trucks and may lack basic English skills, presenting a troubling risk on highways.

Oklahoma’s Governor Kevin Stitt supported the operation, pledging to maintain standards requiring legal status and English proficiency for commercial drivers. The situation, as Donald pointed out, is not just localized; it represents a broader danger.

He recounted a tragic incident in Florida where a driver entered a restricted area, leading to a deadly accident that claimed three lives, emphasizing the urgency for corrective action. “If these states don’t act responsibly, the federal government must intervene,” he stated, urging Democratic governors in sanctuary states to reconsider their positions on immigration policy.

Donald concluded with a reminder that ensuring road safety transcends political ideology and is instead about protecting the lives of American citizens.

Furthermore, National Border Security Council Vice President Al Del Cueto echoed Donald’s sentiments, expressing disbelief that illegal immigrants hold CDLs at all. “They shouldn’t even have a driver’s license, given their status,” he stated.

Following this, ICE plans to expand its enforcement measures across other states, focusing on highway safety and cooperation with local authorities. Past operations have already led to significant arrests, targeting illegal drivers involved in various criminal activities.
