The news that Pope Leo, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, is a White Sox fan has sparked curiosity among American sports enthusiasts. When he was elected in May 2025, many wondered whether he preferred the Cubs or the White Sox. Despite initial confusion suggesting he was a Cubs fan, it became clear that he was loyal to the White Sox, even having attended a game during the World Series about 20 years ago.
Following his election, Justin Ishbia, a law school friend of Pope Leo, decided to buy the White Sox and brainstormed creative ways to connect with Chicago sports fans. One idea that popped up was inviting the Pope to throw the first pitch at the new stadium. However, there was the tricky issue of how to actually meet the Pope for this proposal.
It turned out that the Vatican Ambassador, Brian Birch, who previously lived in Chicago, liked the concept. Ishbia and his wife met with the Pope in Vatican City and presented him with a signed replica jersey from the 2005 World Series. Surprisingly, the Pope was on board with the idea, although he mentioned needing to fit it into his busy schedule.
This historic event, with the first American-born pope throwing the first pitch, will likely mark the first papal visit to Chicago since 1979. As excitement builds, let’s just hope he lands a solid strike. Perhaps this could even reignite the magic of the White Sox’s 2005 season for their fans.
