Nicki Minaj Calls for Action on Religious Violence in Nigeria
Award-winning artist Nicki Minaj has urged for action regarding the ongoing massacre of Christians in Nigeria. Collaborating with UN Ambassador Mike Walz, she raised concern about the increasing persecution of Christians in the West African nation.
On Tuesday, they both made an appearance at the US Mission to the United Nations in New York City to bring attention to the issue.
Minaj expressed her honor in highlighting the dangerous situation that thousands of individuals face in Nigeria, where Islamic militants are reportedly targeting and killing Christians and Catholic clergy.
She emphasized that, although people may hold different beliefs, everyone deserves the freedom to express their faith, regardless of their background or locality.
“Music has taken me all over the world. I’ve witnessed how music brings people to life, transcending language, culture, and religion,” Minaj said. “Freedom of religion enables us to express our faith universally.”
She expressed gratitude for living in a place where individuals can openly and safely share their beliefs but pointed out that this is not solely a Nigerian issue. She mentioned that faith is under threat globally, and many communities live with persistent fear. Urging prompt action, she aimed to address the injustice faced by these individuals.
Ambassador Walz commended Minaj for her advocacy, stating she could have chosen a more carefree path but decided to use her influence for meaningful change.
“You have achieved remarkable success and could just be enjoying life, but here you are, ready to tackle this serious issue,” Walz remarked.
Minaj clarified that this isn’t a matter of taking sides; it’s about giving voice to those who have been silenced.
“This isn’t about partisanship. It’s about opposing injustice—something I have always championed and will continue to advocate for,” she stated.
In addition, President Trump has labeled Nigeria as a country of particular concern and has assigned West Virginia Representative Riley Moore alongside House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole to investigate the situation.
