Missing California Girl’s Mother in Court for Unrelated Charge

A California woman, described as “at risk,” briefly appeared in court on Wednesday. Ashley Buzzard, 35, is facing a felony charge of false imprisonment related to an incident at her home in Lompoc on November 6. This case is separate from the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of her nine-year-old daughter, Melody Buzzard.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is emphasizing that the investigation into Melody’s whereabouts is distinct from the charges against her mother. Authorities began looking into Melody’s case on October 14, after school officials reported her being missing for an extended period. During the investigation, deputies stated that Ashley did not provide a credible account of her daughter’s location and was uncooperative with the authorities.

It was noted that Ashley, during a visit from a court official who has known her for a while, mentioned where Melody might be and who she was with. However, this official expressed doubt about the accuracy of the information given Ashley’s erratic behavior at the time. He even suggested that Melody might be in Utah.

During a previous visit, Ashley reportedly seemed distressed after divulging some information, subsequently locking the door and brandishing a box cutter, which led to her being charged. Although she ultimately released the court official, he decided to call the police.

On Wednesday, Ashley appeared in court dressed in a long knit cardigan, showing a marked change from the previous court appearance where she had short curls. She averted her gaze as she entered the courtroom alongside her public defender. The hearing was brief, lasting less than a minute.

The lawyers confirmed that a preliminary hearing is set for Thursday, and evidence will be presented, with a judge deciding whether to proceed with the felony case. Ashley’s background also came into focus, with her mother speaking about a troubled past filled with instability and violence, which reportedly included periods of homelessness.

Investigators reported that Ashley left California with Melody on October 7 in a rented car, which was subsequently seen traveling through several states. After the car was returned to the rental agency, its license plates had been swapped with what are believed to be fake New York plates.

Authorities released surveillance footage showing both Ashley and Melody, indicating they wore disguises during their trip to avoid being recognized. Melody is described as being between 4 feet and 4 feet 6 inches tall, weighing between 60 to 100 pounds, with curly brown hair and brown eyes.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone who might have information about Melody’s whereabouts to reach out by phone.
